Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

December 27, 2018

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to our dear church family!

We are currently in Demopolis, AL, on the Tombigbee River and will be here until the second week in January. The blog will be updated later this week, but in the meantime, we bring you greetings from the Highland United Methodist Church in Birmingham, AL. We rented a car and drove up there to spend a few days sightseeing, and this church was literally just around the corner from our hotel. We do not find many UCC churches in the South. Usually,  the UMC seems the most compatible with our theology as compared to the various strains of Baptist and the Church of Christ. It is a large church (over 200 people there) and we enjoyed a children’s Christmas pageant, and got to sing many of our favorite carols.

The first spot we visited in Birmingham was the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. One of the exhibits showed all the churches that had actively supported the civil rights movement in the early 60s. We are attaching a picture of the Frist Congregational Church UCC in Smithfield, AL that was the sight of secret meetings in 1963.

We had planned to be in Mobile, AL for Christmas, but decided to stay here in Demopolis for about a month and use it as a base for sightseeing, since the monthly rate here is a considerable savings over the weekly rates, and the weather has been less than cooperative. Our next car trip will be to New Orleans and Baton Rouge for a few days.

Wishing you all a multitude of blessings for 2019,

Louise and Lenny

PS We will probably make a guest appearance some time in early March. Our current plan is to spend most of February on the west coast of Florida.
